Our Top Family-Friendly Ski Resorts in France – Part 6: Samoëns
Welcome to Part 6, the final post in our series about our Our Top Family-Friendly Ski Resorts in France. If you missed our posts on Avoriaz, Val d’Isère, Courchevel, Megève or La Plagne click here!
Last but not least we are moving further north again to a resort that is part of the Grand Massif ski area. Samoëns is a stunning village resort with beautiful medieval stone architecture and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Samoëns is an area that is predominantly a nature reserve and offers the perfect balance between typical French village life and great skiing. This is a hidden gem of a ski resort and is very popular by French natives meaning it is a great option if you want to immerse yourself in French life.
The resort is great for families and offers modest altitudes with regular heavy snowfall; secure beginners areas and gentle areas for those developing their skiing technique as well as slopes for the more experienced skier.
The centrepiece of the town is its beautiful town square with its famous lime tree and a charming 16th-century church. The centre is also pedestrianised making it nice and safe to roam around and explore. The town has lots of antique shops and independent gourmet food shops selling delicious pâtisseries and local produce such as cheese, meats and wine.
One of the most attractive features of this area is their famous botanical garden which is unique to this area. The botanical gardens were created in 1905 and have more than 5,000 different plants giving you plenty to explore off-season.
The resort is easy to get to by air and is just over an hour away from Geneva airport. Flights can be booked all year round and cheap fares can be found particularly if booked well in advance. The nearest train station is Cluses (20km) where you can pick up a bus to the resort. There are also easy rail connections from Britain, linking to France’s high-speed TGV train service. Samoëns is also about a 9 hour drive from Calais, and it’s motorway all the way (apart from the last 12 miles/20kms).
Whilst Samoëns is not quite as lively as some of the more commercial ski resorts in France, it does offer a more authentic French experience, plenty of things to do all year round, and a solid dose of French charm.
For avid skiers, we are sure you will want to visit a few different resorts. But once you fall in love with an area, you may wish to look at buying property there so you can make the most of the ski season each year, and we would love to help you with that. Our highly trained team has an intimate knowledge of the property buying and French mortgages.
